He served: Jan.-Mar.37 with Pionier-Lehr-und-Versuchs-Bataillon 2 in Sperenberg; Aug.39-Jan.42 as bridge building specialist with railway construction unit Eisenbahn-Bau-Kompanie 105, 1939 active in Poland, 1940 active in France (Maginot line, Sedan, Somme, Oise, Aisne, Reims, Marne, Seine) and occupation force France and Belgium; Feb.42-Jan.43 with Eisenbahn-Bau-Kompanie 123 active at the Eastern Front (Southern Russia, Donez); Jan.43 wounded by shrapnell at his neck, head and shoulder and hospitalized in Germany and till Jan.44 for recovery attached to Eisenbahn-Pionier-Ersatz-Bataillon 2 and finally discharged from military service on 31.1.44.
