Awarded for the outstanding defense of his Bataillon while it was fighting on the right flank of the Tartar wall between Citadel and Schtschemilowka along with the rightly adjacent Gruppe Major Kassner during the time period 06.-09.11.1943. Hauptmann Bunge’s energetic leadership helped ensure that the Soviets were unable to break through the Tartar wall during this time period despite the bitter combat all around, particularly near the village of Schtschemilowka.
