He served Aug.39-Jan.40 with 9./Grenzwacht-Abschnitt Rgt.132, active in the battle at the Rhine, Mosel, Saar area. Jan.40 his unit was renamed Fest.Stamm.-Btl.2 active securing the German western border (Westwall) at the Rhine Mosel area. It was then a fortress unit based at Saarbrücken. He was May 40 three days schooled as field cook at St.Wendel (Germany), and 11.3-27.4.40 schooled as weapons NCO. Also at St.Wendel. Till Nov.40 he was the weapon specialist of his unit at Saarbrücken. Nov.40 his unit was disbanded and he went to Lds.Sch.Batl.779 a T.A. unit still based at fortresses at the Westwall (Saarpfalz). May.41 he was sent to the replacement unit Ld.Sch.Ers.Btl.12 at Mainz and was 20.3.41 discharged from the army.
