He served: Jan.-Mar.41 for basic military training with Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 211 in Hannover; Mar.-Sep.41 with 1./Schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 861, a heavy artillery unit active under the 9th Army in Middle Russia (Bialystok, Minsk) and later under the 6th Army in Southern Russia (Shitomir, Kiew); Sep.-Dec.41 with AOK6, the upper command of the 6th Army active in Southern Russia (Kiew, Donez). On 25.11.41 he was brought to the military hiospital in Kiew, probably because of illness. He was released from military service on 22.6.42 but worked as truck driver in Saarbrücken for the Luftwaffe. He got wounded on 19./20.9.42 in Saarbrücken while working for the air district XII, Luftgau XII. 1944 he worked first as a truck driver for the army supply office in Saarbrücken, later that year till the end of the war for the Wehrmachts-Prüfungsstelle V, military examination office in the Krupp truck factory Südwerke in Bamberg.
