He was called-up in 1916 and served: Sep.1916 with 1.Ersatz-Bataillon/2.Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.131 based in Bielefeld; Oct.-Dec.1916 with Feld-Rekruten-Depot 10.Armee based in Wilna; 1917-1918 with the army horses hospital Pferdelazarett 162 where he served as a carpenter. He was discharged on 26.11.1918.
