He volunteered the Luftwaffe Flak in 1938 and served: Nov.38-Aug.39 with 12./Flak-Regiment 9 in Regensburg-Obertraubling; Aug.39-May 40 with Reserve Flakscheinwerfer-Abteilung 908 based in the Nürnberg area and active in Germany with 6 days enemy contact; May 40-Apr.45 as truck driver and search light mechanic with 13./Flak-Regiment 27(mot), a motorized flak unit active under the 9.Flak-Division securing airfields in Southern Russia (Dnjepr, Nikolajew, Crimea, Kertsch, Tamman, Sewastopol), 1944-45 in Hungary and the Saarpfalz. Two K98 rifles issued to him in 1944.
