He volunteered the Waffen-SS in 1941 and served Jun.41 with SS-Bau-Bataillon(mot) based in Debica (Waffen-SS troop training grounds) Poland; Sep.41-Jan.43 as guard with Waffen-SS guarding units in Debica; Jan.-Apr.43 in the truck repair shop of SS-Kraftfahr-Ersatz-Abteilung in Berlin-Lichterfelde; Apr.-May 43 as truck engineer with SS-Werkstattkompanie z.b.V. in Oranienburg; May-Jul.43 with Kraftfahrtechnische Lehranstallt der SS in Vienna Austria; from Jul.43 onwards with the 1943 formed SS-Panzer-Regiment of (12.)SS-Panzergrenadier-Division ”Hitler Jugend”, I.SS-Panzer-Korps, based in Mailly-le-Camp (Waffen-SS troop training grounds) in Middle France near Paris (1944 based as reserve in Hasselt Belgium, Jun.44 active against the allied invasion in Caen and Fallaise pocket).
