He served: with Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 476 in Glauchau; 1941-1943 with the pioneer platoon of Infanterie-Regiment 185 (later renamed Grenadier-Regiment 185) of the 87.Infanterie-Division active in Middle Russia (Bialystok, Smolensk, Wjasma, Moscow, Gshatsk, Rshew, Newel, Welish, Witebsk). He got wounded on 14.3.43 but stayed at the front (wound badge awarded in the field).
