He served 1939-1940 with RAD-Abteilung 6/240 in Habscheid working at the German Westwall; 1942-1943 with the pioneer platoon of Grenadier-Regiment 473 of the 253.Infanterie-Division active in Middel Russia (Rshew); got wounded fot the first time on 21.9.42 and was till Oct.42 hospitalized in the military hospital in Heiligenstadt; 1943 he served with 3./Divisions-Füssilier-Bataillon 253 also of the 253.Infanterie-Division still active in Middle Russia (Jelnja, Orel „Hagen-Stellung“, Brjansk, Bobruisk); got wounded for the third time on 26.12.43 and was hospitalized in field hospital 5./Armee-Sanitäts-Abteilung 552.
