He served 1942 with 3./Panzerjäger-Abteilung 267, the anti tank unit of the 267.Infanterie-Division at that moment active in Middle Russia (Moscow, Moshaisk). He got wounded for the first time on 4.1.42 and was hospitalized in Spindelmühle. After recovery (award document probably issued in 1943 or even later) he served with Grenadier-Regiment 354 of the 62.Infanterie-Division active in Southern Russia (under Heeresgruppe Don in the Donez area).
