He served 1942 with 1./Pionier-Bataillon 183, the engineer unit of the 83.Infanterie-Division. The division took part in the invasion of France in 1940 and spent 1941 on occupation duty. In early 1942 it was sent to the Eastern Front, being assigned to the Third Panzer Army of Army Group Centre (Middle Russia: Welish and Weliki-Luki). Heinz got wounded for the first time on 3.2.42 (battle at Welish) and was hospitalized in Germany (Reservelazarett Münder).
