Sep.1916 basic training with Füsilier-Regiment 73; Sep.-Nov.1916 with field recruits unit Rekruten Depot 50.Reserve-Division; Nov.1916-Mar.1918 front service at the western front Belgium and France  with Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 230, Somme, Flandern, Artois etc.; heavily wounded during the battle at the Somme on 4.2.1917 and till Aug.1917 hospitalized and recovery and back to the front again; 13.10.1917 awarded with the Iron Cross 2nd Class; Oct.1917 trained as stretcher bearer, Finally discharged May 1919.
