He served: 1939 with Pionier-Bataillon 5 in Ulm; 1943 with Heeres-Pionier-Bataillon (mot) 127 (Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 127) of the 27.Panzer-Division active in Southern Russia (Woronesh, Donez); wounded 31.1.43; till May 43 hospitalized in Stuttgart-Hohenheim; for recovery with Panzer-Pionier-E.u.A.-Bataillon 5 in Ulm; 1945 serving with Pionier-Bataillon 668 active under the 1.Armee in the Saarpfalz area.
